J. Freeman & Son (Netherton) Ltd Funeral Directors

Case Study

I created the first website for this sixth-generation family funeral director in Netherton, Dudley, helping people find its services and access practical guidance following a death. I also designed matching business cards to bring a consistent style to its online presence and printed materials.

Website Design and Development

Building an online resource

The business had previously relied on word of mouth. Its first website would give people another way to discover its services, learn about the company and find information following a death. The brief went beyond introducing the business.

Visitors might need to understand what to do next, explore funeral arrangements or return for guidance after contacting the team. I needed to organise that information around their needs.

The Approach

Making information manageable

My main challenge was presenting detailed information without overwhelming someone who might be grieving, confused or unsure where to start.

I divided the content into categories, including “The Funeral” and “Useful Information”, so visitors could look for guidance relevant to their stage in the process. Separate pages give each topic space without asking someone to scroll through one long collection of information.

The audience was broad: people of different ages and backgrounds could need the service. That made straightforward navigation and clear presentation central to my approach.

Design and Usability

A respectful visual style

I kept the design minimalist, giving the information priority and avoiding unnecessary visual distractions. The darker colour palette helps establish a restrained tone without making the website feel gloomy.

I wanted the finished site to reflect the care and dignity of the business, as well as the family’s pride in its history. The colour and type choices gave its existing logo a consistent setting across the website and printed materials.

Respectful design

A restrained colour palette and simple layout reflect the care and dignity of this sixth-generation family business.

Clear guidance

Information grouped around the funeral process helps visitors find relevant guidance without feeling overwhelmed.

Accessibility in mind

A clean structure, clear typography and good colour contrast throughout.

The Outcome

Delivery and feedback

The business now has a website where people can explore its services and access guidance throughout the funeral process.

Neil’s feedback highlights his confidence in my understanding of the importance of keeping required information current.

As Funeral Directors, there are a few legal requirements on the site which we have to make sure are kept up to date.

Matt understands this and knows how important it is for it to be kept up to date. We know that we are in safe hands.”

Beyond Launch

Ongoing care for the website

I continue to look after the website through my monthly Support Plan. This includes software updates and checks, daily cloud backups, security monitoring to help reduce risks and a response to issues when they arise.

I also review technical performance and accessibility, making reasonable improvements and adjustments as part of ongoing maintenance.

Graphic Design

Business cards with a consistent finish

I carried the website’s visual style through to the business cards, using the same colours and typography with a respectful, easy-to-read layout.

Together with the client, I chose premium stock and a raised logo to convey the quality of service they wanted the cards to represent. I also arranged printing and delivery to their address, taking the project through from design to finished cards.
